Keypad issues

Keypads tend to malfunction over time, either because of dirty build up or due to wear and tear. Since replacing a kaypad will cost atleast a 1000, it is worthwhile to look for simpler alternatives.
The external keypad is a USB pluggable device, but it needs to be carried along and cannot be used as easily as the onboard keypad.

A better way is to remap the defective keys. Since there are many keys that are rarely or never used, those keys can be used to generate the input of the defective key. Say, for example, if the number 1 is not working, the "tilde" key (the one to the left of 1, can be remapped to generate 1.
For Windows users, keytweak http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/is a simple application that accomplishes this.
In Linux, one can use the xmodmap command as demonstrated on this page http://www.columbia.edu/~djv/docs/keyremap.html.
